Housing and Budget
The grant of $5,000 is paid to the awardee and may be allocated as the graduate student sees fit within the scope of the approved project. Payments are made upon confirmation of study dates of the awardee for time to be spent in London or beyond. Typical airfare in 2013 is between $750 and $1,000 round-trip; housing is available in small hotels or at places such as International House London (IHL, for example, can be £225 per week (approx. $360), therefore $750 for two weeks, and $1,500 for four weeks.) Based on those figures, the balance remaining after air travel and accommodations for food and expenses would be between $3,250 for two weeks to $2,500 for a month, which is approximately $100 to $150 per day for lunch/dinner, admissions, local transportation and other costs. Please note: Sir John Soane's Museum Foundation and Sir John Soane's Museum do not endorse or have any relationship with IHL or travel vendors. Information provided is purely for reference purposes as are the amounts provided in this "mock" budget.
There is no pre-set amount of time to be spent in London or at the Museum, nor is there a pre-set time period during the year – awardees generally travel in the Summer, but they may go Fall, Winter, or Spring as well, as long as it is within one year from the time the award is being made.
