Sir John Soane's Museum Foundation Traveling Fellowship Program
Deadline for submission: March 1
* New in 2016, we will provide an additional grant towards airfare.

The purpose of the Sir John Soane's Museum Foundation Traveling Fellowship is to enable students in graduate degree programs in the history of art, architecture, interior design, and the decorative arts to travel to London to pursue research projects related to any aspect of the work of Sir John Soane or Sir John Soane's Museum and its collections. Annually, the Foundation entertains and reviews proposals from qualified candidates from universities and institutions around the world. Two awards are presented - one to a student of architecture and the second open to all candidates. Recipients are selected by Sir John Soane's Museum Foundation Fellowship Advisory Committee.

The Traveling Fellowship was established to support research in art, architecture and the decorative arts, in the Soanean tradition, in accordance with Sir John Soane’s Museum Foundation’s mission to foster the knowledge and appreciation of art and architecture in the United States and abroad.

Award Conditions
The award provides a payment to the award recipient just prior to the beginning of the work and research period of the project and is to include any related travel expenses and housing for the period work is undertaken.
At the end of the research project the award recipient must submit a report on the results of the project. The report may be in the form of a written paper or a sketch book.
The recipient may be asked by Sir John Soane's Museum Foundation to deliver a talk, at a mutually agreeable time and venue, on a fellowship topic related to Sir John Soane, or Sir John Soane's Museum and its collection.

Housing and Budget
The grant of $5,000 is paid to the awardee and may be allocated as the graduate student sees fit within the scope of the approved project. Payments are made upon confirmation of study dates of the awardee for time to be spent in London or beyond. Typical airfare is between $850 and $1,000 round-trip; housing is available in small hotels or at places such as International House London (IHL, for example, can be from £225 per week and higher (approx. $370), therefore $750 for two weeks, and $1,500 for four weeks.)Based on those figures, the balance remaining after air travel and accommodations for food and expenses would be between $3,250 for two weeks to $2,500 for a month, which is approximately $100 to $150 per day for lunch/dinner, admissions, local transportation and other costs. Please note: Sir John Soane's Museum Foundation and Sir John Soane's Museum do not endorse or have any relationship with IHL or travel vendors. Information provided is purely for reference purposes as are the amounts provided in this "mock" budget.

There is no pre-set amount of time to be spent in London or at the Museum, nor is there a pre-set time period during the year as long as it is within a one year from the time the award is being made.
